Glimmerglass Opera The Young American Artists Program Note: Applications for the 1999 Auditions are no longer being accepted. |
Program Overview
Established in 1988, Glimmerglass Opera's Young American Artists Program aims at professional growth primarily through a carefully structured performance environment. During the summer, Young Artists not only sing in the mainstage productions (roles in 1999 are listed below) but also participate in a solo recital series, concerts and masterclasses with such distinguished teachers as Sherrill Milnes, Harry Bicket, Bernard Uzan and Lorna Haywood, who will return in 1999. Another important aspect of the Program is the opportunity to audition for many visiting administrators and artists' managers who are attending performances. The Program is under the artistic direction of Stewart Robertson, Glimmerglass Opera's Music Director, and returning in 1999 as Director of the Program will be Patrick Hansen.
The repertoire for the 1999 season is a typical Glimmerglass mix of the familiar and the daring. Making Glimmerglass debuts, Irene Lewis, Robert Falls and John Cox join Mark Lamos in directing the productions, which will be conducted by Stewart Robertson, George Manahan and Jane Glover. Cast members in 1999 will include Joyce Guyer, William Burden, James Maddalena, Phyllis Pancella, Mark Delavan and Jeffrey Lentz.
CENTRAL PARK, a triptych of operas by Deborah Drattell/Wendy Wasserstein, Robert Beaser/Terrence McNally, Michael Torke/A.R. Gurney has been jointly commissioned by Glimmerglass Opera, New York City Opera and Great Performances, and is scheduled to be televised at Glimmerglass Opera during the summer season. Further exciting developments include a recording project featuring members of the Program in works conducted by Stewart Robertson.
